When AI Agents Attack Your Brand: A Playbook for Iraqi Companies
Earlier today, BBC Verify confirmed it: a fabricated image of an explosion at a base in the region reached hundreds of millions of views before anyone could stop it. Built from a real photo, amplified with AI, spread across social media in hours.
That was not a one-off event. It was a template.
What happened to that base can happen to your brand.
The same tools can generate a press release under your company’s name announcing a price hike, a synthetic video of your CEO saying something they never said, or a WhatsApp voice note in local dialect claiming your product caused harm. The cost of producing this content has collapsed to near zero.
Associate Professor Timothy Graham at Queensland University of Technology, who tracks AI-driven disinformation, put it plainly: “What used to require professional video production can now be done in minutes. The barrier to creating convincing synthetic content has essentially collapsed.”

Why companies in Iraq are especially exposed
According to DataReportal’s Digital 2026 Iraq report, there are 40.1 million TikTok users aged 18 and above in the country. TikTok’s advertising reach covers 88.2% of the entire internet user base. The information environment is fast, politically charged, and has less Arabic-language fact-checking infrastructure than comparable markets.
When a crisis erupts, it creates an information vacuum. Brands get pulled in whether they want to be or not. A competitor, a disgruntled former employee, or an automated content farm can drop fabricated material and watch it spread across Iraqi social media in under an hour.
Most companies in Iraq have no protocol for this. No monitoring. No pre-written responses. No single person with authority to act at 11pm.
What your company should actually do
This is not about having a social media manager. It is a documented decision chain with four parts:
- Real-time monitoring — someone tracks brand mentions in Arabic and English continuously. The tools are not expensive and require minimal setup.
- Response framework — four pre-written templates for the most likely attack scenarios: a product rumor, a fabricated leadership statement, a fake company announcement, and a visual manipulation.
- Designated voice — one person with authority to respond, in a specific channel, without waiting for a committee. This is what makes the difference at 11pm on a Friday.
- Authentic content moat — a built body of real content, media relationships, and a verifiable public record. When fake content competes with your brand, this is what audiences and journalists reach for first.
That last point is the most overlooked. Brands that recover from misinformation events fastest are the ones that built credibility before any attack. You cannot build that foundation during a crisis.
What the data says right now
OECD.AI — the international body that catalogs artificial intelligence incidents globally — documented confirmed cases of AI-generated deepfakes spreading on TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram this week. Verified fabrications: video, imagery, and synthetic audio. The same platforms your customers use every day.
DW Academy’s research on Arabic-language fact-checking confirms that information vacuums in the region are consistently exploited to target businesses, institutions, and individuals — not just governments.
The question is not whether this will affect companies in Iraq. It already is. The question is whether your company has a plan.
